Exercise caution after magnitude 5.9 earthquake strikes in China's Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region

Travellers in affected areas should continue to exercise caution and follow all official directives after a magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck Jiashi county (Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region (XUAR), China) at 21.27 (local time) on 19 January. According to the United States Geological Survey, the tremor occurred 53 miles (85km) east-north-east of Arzak and 62 miles (100km) east of Kashi (Kashgar, both XUAR), at a depth of six miles (11km). Tremors were also felt in Almaty (Kazakhstan) and Bishkek (Kyrgyzstan). The quake was followed by at least two 4.9 magnitude aftershocks that originated 75 miles (121km) east-north-east of Arzak. Further aftershocks are liable to occur in the coming days.
