Summary

While Melbourne is an undeniably fantastic destination, a place where any visitor should spend at least a day or three in, it also happens to be a great base for a road trip. Set on the banks of the scenic Yarra River, on the coast of the almost entirely enclosed bay of Port Phillip, Melbourne is surrounded by gorgeous scenery. From the beautiful Yarra Valley wine region to the beaches on the Mornington Peninsula and the coastal cliffs along the magnificent Great Ocean Road, the landscapes around Melbourne simply beg to be explored by car.

Sightseeing

Day 1 - Melbourne to Yarra Valley (62 km or to Marysville 98 km)

Leaving Melbourne, the best route to the Yarra Valley is via the Eastern Freeway through Melbourne’s eastern suburbs. The Yarra Valley is home to Victoria’s earliest  vineyards & is recognised as one of the world’s great wine growing regions. Numerous wineries offer cellar door tastings & sales, & have restaurants serving gourmet food & fine local produce accompanied by their wine. Perhaps also get close to Australian wildlife at Healesville Sanctuary, home to dingos, kangaroos, wombats & the elusive platypus. For those travelling onto Marysville, drive through the spectacular Black Spur between Healesville & Narbethong on the Maroondah Highway passing through towering mountain ash trees & free ferns. Take the right hand turn to Marysville an ideal destination for nature lovers & adventurers alike.

Day 2 - Yarra Valley to Philip Island (148 km or from Marysville 172 km)

This morning travel south east to San Remo in time for the free daily feeding of the Pelicans at noon, before heading over the bridge to Phillip Island. Phillip Island is home to Australia's famous Little Penguins. The famous `Penguin Parade' occurs each evening at sunset & should not be missed.

Includes 3-park pass plus (Penguin Parade, Koalas, Churchill Island).

Day 3 - Philip Island to Mornington Peninsula (107km)

Gippsland Highway to the heart of the Mornington Peninsula. Stylish Sorrento & Portsea are filled with antique shops, galleries, cafes & numerous walking trails along the ocean-facing coastline. Heading inland, you’ll find a number of boutique wineries, where many vineyard restaurants create gourmet dishes to match their individual wines. The afternoon is yours to explore all that the Mornington Peninsula has to offer. Maybe grab an attraction pass which includes entry to the Lavender Farm, Moonlit Sanctuary & Cape Schanck Lighthouse to name a few. Visit Flinders on the eastern side of the Peninsula & Cape Schanck, the southern most point of the Peninsula.

Day 4 - Mornington Peninsula To Melbourne (75km)

Today depart the Mornington Peninsula & then make the return journey north to Melbourne along the Nepean Highway and Melbourne’s beachside suburbs.

Note: Your vehicle is booked until tomorrow and should be returned by the same time it was collected on Day 1 to avoid additional charges.
