Day 3 - Istanbul Byzantine and Ottoman Tour (Full Day)

Breakfast in hotel. Start your experience with a pickup from your centrally located Istanbul hotel. Settle into your luxury Mercedes minivan with your guide and drive into the UNESCO-listed district of Sultanahmet, home to a glorious array of mosques, palaces and relics from the Ottoman and Byzantine periods.

Visit the Hippodrome, a former chariot race arena in Ottoman and Byzantine times. Imagine the clatter of chariot wheels as you wander around this city park and hear fascinating facts about the races and events held here centuries ago.

Continue to the Blue Mosque, whose six minarets are a fixture of Istanbul’s skyline. Admire the 17th-century edifice, and marvel at the thousands of bright blue Iznik tiles that coat its interior.

Next, head for the Topkapi Palace, the opulent palace-turned-museum that was home to the Ottoman emperors between the 15th and 19th centuries. Hear anecdotes about the sultans and their entourages, and wonder at the riches of its courts and pavilions, including the jewel-stuffed treasury and priceless displays of Oriental porcelain.

Move on to the Hagia Sophia, built as a basilica in the 6th century before the Ottomans turned it into a mosque in the 15th century. Behold the dome and stunning Byzantine mosaics of this architectural gem as your guide recounts its turbulent history.

In-between sightseeing visits, stop for lunch (own expense) at a local restaurant or cafe and refuel for your explorations in the afternoon.

Finish up at the spellbinding Grand Bazaar. This chaotic, covered bazaar dates from the 15th century, and bursts with stalls peddling carpets, spices and trinkets. Bag some bargains with tips from your guide, and return to your minivan for a hotel drop-off, when your tour ends.

Please note: On Fridays the Blue Mosque will be closed until 2:30pm for prayer, entry will not be permitted and on Tuesdays Topkapi Palace is closed.

Day 4 - Afternoon Bosphorus Tour (Half Day)

After breakfast, free to explore the city by your own. Get pickup at 2pm for the Afternoon Bosphorus Tour.

Settle aboard and travel to a portside for your sightseeing cruise along the Bosphorus Strait. This famous stretch of water divides Europe and Asia, so as you sail it you can look out over two continents.

Find a comfortable spot on board, and have your camera ready as you sail by an array of famous Istanbul landmarks. Waft under the vast Bosphorus Bridge and take pictures of the extravagant palaces, Ottoman-era villas and other sights ranged along the European and Asian banks.

See the crenelated 15th-century Rumeli Fortress, the bustling cafes on the Asian waterfronts, and pass the Beylerbeyi Palace and elaborate gardens of Yildiz Palace.

After your 1.5-hour cruise, enjoy a panoramic coach drive around the neighborhoods that line the Golden Horn, the inlet that separates old and new European Istanbul. Pass through the former Jewish quarter of Balat with its synagogues, balconied townhouses and stepped sidewalks; and see the Church of St Stephen of the Bulgars, a church built entirely from cast iron.

Glimpse other sights such as the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate, Jewish Hospital, and the remains of Istanbul’s Roman- and Byzantine-built city walls, and then continue to the Eyup neighborhood to Pierre Loti Hill.

Ride the cable car up the hillside, and savor a drink (own expense) at the hilltop café as you admire the unbroken views down to the Golden Horn below.

Your tour then finishes back at the original start point.
