Sightseeing

Day 1: Arrive Reykjavik
Delve into a mythical land forged by fire and ice. Our epic journey through lush lava fields and the windswept landscapes of Iceland begins in the quirky capital of Reykjavik. Spend time exploring Iceland's Viking heritage and admire the beautiful natural backdrop before meeting your Travel Director and fellow travellers for a Welcome Reception.

Day 2: Reykjavik - Thingvellir - Gullfoss - Geyse Area - Vik Area
We leave the capital, journeying through Iceland's volcanic landscapes to Thingvellir National Park where we will see first-hand how the movements of the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates have carved into the earth's crust. Visit the world-famous hot spring area of Geyser and see Strokkur shoot a spectacular plume of water and steam high into the air. Our next stop is the 'Golden Waterfall' of Gullfoss, saved at the turn of the last century by the tenacity of a farmer's daughter who threatened to throw herself into its depths if it was developed for hydroelectric power. Continue along the south shore and stop to admire the waterfalls Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss before arriving in the Vík area for dinner.

Day 3: Vik Area - Skaftafell - Jokulsarlon - Hofn
This morning, we cross the vast expanse of Eldhraun, the largest mass of lava ever to flow on the face of the earth, before reaching Skaftafell National Park. See the largest glacier in Iceland, the Vatnajökull, before continuing to Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon, for magnificent views of the ice cap and drifting icebergs that melt into obscurity in the lake's waters. This afternoon enjoy a Cultural Insight at the Thorbergur Centre where you'll learn about one of Iceland's most famous 20th century writers over cake, and coffee or tea. Later, we travel to Höfn, the lobster capital of Iceland.

Day 4: Hofn - Eastern Fjords - Lake Lagarfljot
The mystical landscapes of Almannaskard Pass provide a spectacular backdrop for our leisurely meander along the majestic southern coast of Iceland. We continue to the East Fjords - towering mountains that plunge dramatically into the Norwegian Sea. Consider a visit to Petra's Mineral Collection in Stödvarfjördur, where you will learn about this much-loved local woman who collected stones in her house and garden for over 80 years. Tonight we stay on the shores of Lake Lagarfljot, in Iceland's biggest forest.

Day 5: Lake Lagarfljot - Dettifoss - Lake Myvatn - Akureyri (2 Nights)
Explore the vast moonscape of Mödrudalsöræfi, a highland desert plateau astronauts once used as a practice ground for their voyage to the moon. Then journey to Dettifoss, Europe's most powerful watefall, before continuing towards Námaskard Pass with its colourful bubbling mud pools. Explore the natural beauty of the Lake Myvatn and see the twisted Dimmuborgir rock pillars, chimneys and towers that rise up from the surrounding lava landscape. We journey north to the bustling port of Akureyri with its fine timber buildings beautifully restored to their original glory, stopping en route at the magnificent Godafoss Waterfall.

Day 6: Akureyri - Siglufjordur Excursion
Spend the day in the quaint fishing town of Siglufjördur, nestled within a dramatic fjord on the very edge of Iceland's steep northern mountains. Explore the town at your leisure or consider a visit to the award-winning Herring Era Museum, celebrating the role this industry played in the country's development over the centuries. Amble along the harbour lined with colourful façades or visit one of the local art galleries before returning to Akureyri in the afternoon for some time at leisure. Enjoy dinner this evening at your hotel.

Day 7: Akureyri - Stykkisholmur
Majestic mountains and narrow passes lead to Skagafjördur, renowned for its horse breeding traditions, which we will have an opportunity to experience first-hand at a Be My Guest lunch on a local horse farm. Learn about the unique Icelandic horse breed and watch a short riding demonstration before journeying to picturesque Stykkishólmur, our home for the night.

Day 8: Stykkisholmur - Snaefellsnes Peninsula - Reykjavik (2 Nights)
Snæfellsnes is a unique area with a variety of geological interest such as lava fields, volcanoes, glacier, springs, beautiful formed rock, yellow and black sand beaches and caves as well as interesting bird life. The main attraction is without a doubt Snæfellsjökull glacier, a beautifully shaped strato volcano at the very end of the peninsula. The glacier is also known as the location for Jules Verne's novel 'Journey to the Centre of the Earth', captured in the unspoilt natural wonder surrounding it. This afternoon complete your circuit around Iceland as you arrive back in Reykjavik.

Day 9: Reykjavik Sightseeing and Blue Lagoon Visit & Bathe
Explore the small capital city of Reykjavik on a sightseeing tour this morning. See all the city's major attractions including the Parliament, the harbour, the National Museum, Laugadalur swimming pool and see the city's main landmark, the Hallgrímskirkja Church perched at the top of a hill in the heart of the city. Experience a Cultural Insight at the world-famous Blue Lagoon (please remember to pack your swimwear) - its steaming turquoise waters are said to have healing powers. This evening we reminisce over the quaint myths and legends we've encountered along the way, during a Farewell Dinner with newfound friends and your Travel Director.

Day 10: Depart Reykjavik
For now it's time to say a fond farewell to Iceland after an unforgettable trip. Transfers are provided to Keflavik airport. Conditions apply.
